Julie Béziau

Film editor

A picture editor for twenty-five years, I began by editing documentaries and television series for France 3, Arte and France 5. Drawn by my own roots, I then spent six years in Vietnam, where I started editing feature films. Based in Toulouse since 2013, I am currently training in sound design.

Approach

I am often chosen for my feel for sound editing; I can only find the rhythm of a cut by working on its sound. Whenever possible, I collaborate with the composers, so I can weave their work into mine.

Teaching

I began teaching as an editor during the Varan Vietnam workshops, between 2008 and 2015. These sessions aimed to mentor young Vietnamese directors and editors in their documentary editing practice, and to support them through the various stages of shaping their stories up to the final cut of their films.

In Vietnam, I led two-week editing workshops every year between 2013 and 2019 for the “Autumn Meeting” — film gatherings created in 2013 by director Pham Dang Di and producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc. Developing collaborative work with around twenty trainees, I split the time between theory and practice of editing, across both fiction and documentary.

With TPD, an audiovisual training centre in Hanoi founded by director Bui Thac Chuyen, from 2008 to 2013, I helped set up and run the “Chung ta lam phim” directing workshops.

In 2012, I mentored young authors in a creation workshop at Hanoi DocLab, a centre dedicated to documentary film and video art, founded in 2009 by filmmaker and visual artist Nguyen Trinh Thi within the Goethe-Institut in Hanoi.

In Toulouse, between 2017 and 2025, I also worked as an editor within the “Métiers de l’audiovisuel” BTS programme at Lycée des Arènes, at SAE Institute, and with the Caméra au Poing association based in Foix.
